Friday the 13th Smoke Alert Day: Effortlessly Saving Lives through Enhanced Emergency Response

On the 13th of this month, the nationwide Smoke Alarm Day will take place. Fire departments, insurance companies, and safety organisations across the country will join forces to reduce the number of fire victims. The theme of the day is "Smoke Alarms Save Lives".

According to the Association of Fire Brigades in NRW, it is crucial to have smoke alarms installed in all bedrooms, children's rooms, corridors leading to the staircase or to the outside. For maximum safety, these devices should be regularly tested and functional. Christoph Dohr, Head of the Damage Prevention & Risk Assessment Department of Provinzial Insurance, emphasises that a smoke alarm can make a crucial difference during a fire, especially at night.

To ensure the functionality of your smoke alarms, they should be checked according to the manufacturer's instructions and at least once a year. If you need further information or advice, you can contact your local fire department or visit the Association of Fire Brigades in NRW's website at www.feuerwehrverband.nrw/verband/themen/brandschutzerziehung-und-brandschutzaufklaerung.

In case of fire, quick and calm action is essential. If possible, leave the apartment, closing doors to prevent the spread of smoke. If the escape route is blocked, stay in a smoke-free room, close the door, and make yourself visible at the window or balcony. Trust the help of the fire department - your safety is their top priority.

Personal experiences of fire victims have been collected for this day, providing a stark reminder of the importance of smoke alarms. These stories can be found at www.rauchmelder-lebensretter.de.

For press enquiries, please contact Maria Marschner at the Association of Fire Brigades in NRW e.V., Windhukstraße 80, 42277 Wuppertal, via email at [email protected] or visit their website at www.vdf.nrw.
