Fire Department Equips Dashcams - Kyoto Project Underway for Video Monitoring

In a significant step towards enhancing road safety, the Drive Recorder 119 project has been expanded to Kyoto City, following its successful implementation in Sakai, Osaka Prefecture. This initiative, a partnership between Kyoto City, Toyota, and ten bus and taxi companies, aims to revolutionise emergency response by utilising dashcams in vehicles as extra eyes for the fire department.

The project's goal is to help change the reality of traffic accidents related to cars, with the hope of bringing the future without traffic fatalities and injuries even sooner. In Sakai, medical care is now provided up to 15 minutes faster due to the implementation of Drive Recorder 119, demonstrating its potential to save lives.

The number of cooperating companies has increased, leading to the installation of dashcams in 800 vehicles, double the number used during the trial. The trial is using footage from buses and taxis to aid in rescuing injured people and fighting fires. This makes Kyoto City the second city in Japan to introduce Drive Recorder 119, after Sakai.

While the exact impact of the Drive Recorder 119 project on traffic accident rates and emergency response times in the targeted cities remains unverified, it is worth noting that dashcams and event data recorders can capture detailed parameters of vehicle incidents, supporting accident analysis and safety improvements. Furthermore, Toyota has a history of promoting new mobility and safety technologies, suggesting that Drive Recorder 119 is part of their ongoing commitment to road safety.
