Title: Diarrhea toll among Dumagat tribe soars, DOH probes cause
Explosion of diarrhea-related deaths among Dumagat tribe in Quezon leaves 6 deceased
The health authorities in Calabarzon and Quezon are diligently investigating the disturbing surge of diarrhea cases among the Dumagat tribe, with at least six deaths in less than two weeks, as reported from Barangay Upper Lumutan in General Nakar town.
According to the Department of Health (DOH), they've tallied 38 cases between September 26 and October 6, revealing the gravity of the situation.
Ariel Valencia, head of the DOH in Calabarzon, said they're collaborating closely with the Integrated Provincial Health Office (IPHO) to deliver essential aid to the affected area. His sentiments were follow-up with, "We're deeply saddened by the loss of our Dumagat brethren due to late medical attention."
The Provincial Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit (RESU) received the initial report on September 26, detailing a fatality caused by severe dehydration. By October 1, the General Nakar rural health unit had managed to reach the affected region, only to learn of five additional diarrhea deaths caused by dehydration during their follow-up investigation.
John Bobbie Roca, head of the RESU, disclosed the first death was characterized by watery stools, abdominal pain, and vomiting, and was sadly already deceased upon arrival at the RHU in Tanay. Common symptoms observed in other patients from Barangay Lumutan, General Nakar, in previous consultations at the RHU in Tanay, included fever, abdominal pain, watery stool, joint pain, cough, and cold.
To combat the diarrhea cases, the DOH Calabarzon has supplied urgently needed medicine and supplies to the RHU. The Provincial Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit and its sanitary inspector have also conducted a swift case investigation. Initial findings point to amoebiasis as the culprit, though laboratory findings are still pending.
Diarrhea outbreaks often stem from contaminated food or water, or direct contact with an infected person. The DOH provides the following tips to help prevent such occurrences:
- Stock up on fresh water from reliable sources. If uncertain, boil water for at least three minutes or chlorinate it.
- Savor only cooked and prepared meals properly. Shun street-vended food.
- Mask your food from insects and rodents by covering them.
- Hygiene is paramount. Lavish your hands regularly, and opt for soap and water when available. In a pinch, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer containing 60% ethyl alcohol or isopropyl alcohol.
- Patients can be administered an Oral Rehydration Solution (ORESOL) and rice soup to replenish lost body fluids.
Should diarrhea persist, it's essential to consult the nearest health center without delay.
