Effort underway at FW Hannover: streamlining rescue efforts through a pilot project focused on enhancing resuscitation efficiency
In the city of Hannover, emergency services have been testing an optimized resuscitation procedure called High Performance Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (HP-CPR) since September 1, 2025. This groundbreaking initiative involves the Hannover Fire Department, emergency doctors, and rescue and aid organizations.
HP-CPR is a standardized and team-oriented concept that focuses on clear collaboration among emergency services, precisely defined roles, and continuous optimization of chest compressions. It incorporates important measures such as airway management and medication administration.
Prof. Dr. med. Andreas Flemming, Medical Director of the Rescue Service of the City of Hannover, expects that the testing of HP-CPR will ensure that everyone in the expanded team knows exactly what steps to take in what order.
Dr. Axel von der Ohe, First Mayor and Councilor for Finance, Order, and Fire, emphasizes the importance of every second in an emergency, stating that HP-CPR is a concept that is scientifically sound and proven to save lives. Initial studies and practical experiences show that HP-CPR can significantly improve chances of successful resuscitation and good neurological recovery.
The goal of HP-CPR is to measurably improve the quality of resuscitation and gain valuable time. To achieve this, an emergency doctor vehicle, an ambulance, and a fire engine staffed with four firefighters from the professional fire brigade are dispatched for corresponding calls since the beginning of the month. This allows for almost continuous performance of life-saving chest compressions and seamless integration of important measures.
The implementation of HP-CPR in Hannover was prepared through intensive training, simulation exercises, and the use of modern resuscitation technology. The Hannover Fire Department and aid organizations active in the area of the state capital Hannover are committed to implementing the latest standards in emergency medicine and continuously improving patient care.
An initial evaluation of the HP-CPR project is planned for six months. For further information, please contact Benjamin Pawlak at Hannover Fire Department: Telephone: 0511 912-1293, Email: [email protected], Website: https://www.feuerwehr-hannover.de.
The High Performance-CPR project was transmitted via news aktuell by Feuerwehr Hannover. The city of Hannover aims to improve the chances of survival for those who have collapsed with this innovative concept of resuscitation.
