Drinking Water Contaminated: Greifswald Issues Boil Order
A routine inspection at the Groß Schönwalde waterworks has revealed microbial contamination with enterococci in the drinking water. The cause of the contamination remains unknown. The Stadtwerke Greifswald will inform citizens and has issued a precautionary boiling order for the entire city area, except for the island of Riems.
On Monday, September 8, 2025, extensive samples were taken during the inspection. Initial findings showed slight exceedances of limit values at one sampling point. The health department has confirmed that there is currently no connection to the ongoing EHEC incident. The county health department is in constant exchange with the Stadtwerke Greifswald to monitor the situation.
The Health Department of the district is now investigating the source water quality in Groß Schönwalde. They are working in cooperation with the Greifswald municipal utilities, who supply the water. No other health risks are expected from the contamination at this time.
The boiling order is a precautionary measure to prevent any potential gastrointestinal irritation. Citizens are advised to boil their water before consumption until further notice. The investigation into the cause of the contamination continues.
