Doctor Convicted for Medical Negligence in Russia, Patient Dies
An obstetrician-gynecologist, Natalia Litvinova, has been convicted for medical negligence leading to a patient's death in Neryungri. The Neryungri City Court sentenced her to one year of restriction of liberty and deprivation of the right to engage in medical activities for two years.
Litvinova was found guilty under part 2 of Article 109 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation. The court considered the nature and severity of her crime, her personality, and family circumstances in imposing the sentence. The doctor admitted her guilt and expressed remorse during the court hearing.
The incident occurred when Litvinova prescribed an unnecessary antibiotic to her patient. This led to a severe 4th-degree anaphylactic shock with an acute malignant course. Despite medical intervention, the patient succumbed to the reaction, resulting in multiple organ failure and severe brain edema.
The verdict is not yet in force. Litvinova's actions have resulted in a tragic loss of life, and the court has responded with a sentence that reflects the gravity of her negligence. Her medical license has been temporarily revoked, and she will serve a year under restriction of liberty.
