Disabled individuals' circumstances discussed: MP Rudolph engages Rhine Werkshop staff in Boppard
In a significant conversation held recently, Dr. Thorsten Rudolph, a Member of the German Bundestag from Koblenz, met with representatives of the Rheinwerkstatt, a workshop for disabled individuals, located in Boppard. The discussion aimed to explore ways to promote inclusion in the general job market and improve the financial situation of people with disabilities.
During the exchange, Dr. Rudolph expressed gratitude towards the Rheinwerkstatt team for the insightful dialogue. Andreas Stamm, the workshop director, was present, along with Silvia Huhn, Bernd Arend, and Sven Ziegler. The conversation served as a valuable source of practical information for Dr. Rudolph.
The Rheinwerkstatt employees shared their experiences, explaining that the workshop is crucial to them as they face barriers in accessing the first job market due to various disabilities. They highlighted that the workshop provides them with the opportunity to participate in working life, positively changing their lives, and offering structure and help, often being the only social space.
The discussion also touched on the remuneration of employees in such facilities and the demand that they should receive the statutory minimum wage. Dr. Rudolph affirmed the employees' legal claim to appropriate remuneration. However, concerns were raised about certain measures under discussion, as both parties believe they could potentially worsen the situation.
Dr. Thorsten Rudolph intends to use the information gained from this conversation in discussions in Berlin. He also stated that the results of a study, the "Remuneration Study" commissioned by the Federal Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs (BMAS), would be of great interest. The study, conducted by Thomas Hagemann, Chief Actuary at Mercer Germany GmbH, is yet to be evaluated.
The conversation concluded on a positive note, with Dr. Thorsten Rudolph expressing his appreciation for the exchange and his commitment to continuing the dialogue in the future. It is essential that workshops like Rheinwerkstatt, recognised under § 219 SGB IX and run by the Bethesda-St. Martin Foundation, have the opportunity to operate in such a way that they remain a place of work for disabled people. The conversation between Dr. Thorsten Rudolph and the Rheinwerkstatt team underscores the importance of continued dialogue and collaboration to ensure the inclusion and fair treatment of individuals with disabilities in the workplace.
