In a heartfelt Instagram post, former tennis champion Monica Seles has revealed her diagnosis with myasthenia gravis (MG), a rare autoimmune neuromuscular disease. At 51 years old, Seles remains resilient in the face of her health challenge.

Seles, who was once Steffi Graf's biggest rival on the tennis court, has managed her condition by working closely with neurologists, understanding her symptoms, and adapting her lifestyle to the physical challenges MG presents. These include muscle weakness and double vision.

Her management includes routine medical care, medication, and lifestyle adjustments that help her cope with symptoms like extreme limb weakness and difficulty with daily tasks. She acknowledges the diagnosis as both a relief in understanding her symptoms and a significant challenge that has led to a “reset” in her personal and professional life.

Seles uses her platform to raise awareness about MG by speaking openly about her experience, helping others understand the disease, and serving as a spokesperson for a pharmaceutical company that produces one of her medications.

In her Instagram post, Seles compared her current health challenge to the battles she faced on the tennis court. She emphasised that, just as she never gave up during her tennis career, she will not give up now.

Seles also discussed her experience with Myasthenia gravis on U.S. television's "Good Morning America", where she spoke about the difficulties she faced in traveling due to her health condition and the need for tips on packing.

Seles' diagnosis came as a surprise, as she didn't know what MG was before her diagnosis. She initially struggled to pronounce the name of the disease. However, she has since become an advocate for MG awareness and wants to use her fame to spark conversations about the disease and its symptoms.
