Denmark to Eliminate Over 25,000 Chickens Due to Bird Flu Outbreak
Bird flu has returned to Danish shores, with authorities planning to cull 25,000 chickens due to an outbreak of H5N8 at a farm. This isn't the first time bird flu has caused a stir, as it's been previously found in wild birds, particularly in Jutland. No human cases have been reported yet.
The entire flock is set for the chop, and a three-kilometer safe zone will be established around the infected farm with strict restrictions on poultry farms. A ten-kilometer zone will be monitored intensely for both wild birds and domestic fowl.
John Larsen, a vet at the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration, warns that an outbreak of bird flu in domestic poultry is a serious threat to farms, as the illness has a high mortality rate. Exports of poultry meat and eggs to non-EU countries have been halted for at least three months, but trade with EU neighbors remains unchanged.
In a slightly different phase, the Danish authorities had previously decided to cull all minks on fur farms to prevent the spread of a mutated coronavirus. A mutated infection in minks poses a risk to humans by weakening the body's ability to produce antibodies. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen feared that this new mutation could spread not only domestically but also worldwide.
Bird flu outbreaks can wreak havoc on poultry farming, with mass cullings leading to economic losses and supply chain disruptions. Biosecurity measures intensify, raising costs for farmers but bolstering defenses against further outbreaks. Trading restrictions and bans from importing countries can follow, exacerbating economic hardships.
