Delphi was initially part of GM's supply chain but was spun off as an independent company amid GM's financial restructuring. However, GM's role in Delphi's downfall cannot be ignored. The automotive giant exerted financial influence over Delphi's operations and contracts, sometimes characterised as direct financing pressure, which exacerbated Delphi's economic challenges. This led to pension plan complications for thousands of Delphi employees, with pension plans transitioning to federal insurers like the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation (PBGC), highlighting the long-term impact on worker retirement security.

The Faulty Ignition Switch

The crux of the matter lies in a faulty ignition switch that has been linked to over 30 deaths and many more personal injuries. GM's management team required Delphi to continue producing the faulty product, threatening to cut ties if Delphi refused. Despite Delphi's concerns about the switch's safety, GM refused to change it without changing Delphi as one of its suppliers.
