Cheerleader, 14, Severely Injured in School Practice
A 14-year-old cheerleader, Jocelyn Treaster, was severely injured during a practice at Hutchinson High School on August 19. She suffered head and spinal injuries after being struck in the head by teammates during a stunt. Treaster spent three days in the hospital and was later transferred to Children's Mercy Hospital.
The accident left Treaster unable to walk within five minutes, as assessed by an athletic trainer. Over a month later, she experienced a loss of feeling in her legs during a church service. The Kansas State High School Activities Association allows cheer stunts on a gym floor without a mat under specific conditions. However, Treaster's family believes the school could have taken additional safety measures to prevent the incident.
A GoFundMe page has been set up to support Treaster and her family with medical bills and travel expenses. The family has concerns about whether floor mats were used during the practice. Despite extensive searches, no information was found about Hutchinson High School's safety measures for their dance group or the Treaster family's demands.
Fourteen-year-old cheerleader Jocelyn Treaster continues to face mobility challenges after a severe injury during a practice at Hutchinson High School. Her family seeks more information on safety measures and believes the school could have done more to prevent the accident. A fundraising campaign is underway to support Treaster and her family with medical expenses.
