Celebrities Promote Mouth Taping for Better Sleep, but Experts Warn of Risks

A new trend is sweeping social media and celebrity circles: mouth taping. The practice, also known as the 'Lip Seal' or 'Mundverschlussmethode', involves sealing one's lips with tape during sleep to promote nasal breathing. Proponents claim it improves sleep quality, reduces snoring, and even enhances skin appearance. However, medical experts caution against this trend, warning of potential risks and lack of scientific evidence.

The method has gained popularity in the US, UK, and Asia. Celebrities like Gwyneth Paltrow, Kendall Jenner, and Miranda Kerr have endorsed it, with Paltrow even dubbing it the 'beauty tip of the life'. They claim it helps achieve a more restful sleep and a defined jawline. The practice is simple: tape is applied to the lips before bed, forcing users to breathe through their nose.

While some studies suggest modest improvements in oxygen levels and breathing interruptions, a review of 10 studies found no clinically significant changes. Moreover, experts warn that mouth taping could worsen sleep apnea, leading to heart disease, stroke, diabetes, depression, and early death. It also poses a risk of asphyxiation, especially for those with nasal blockages or sleep apnea. Nasal breathing does offer advantages, such as filtering dust and allergens, humidifying air, and potentially regulating blood pressure. However, identifying and addressing the root cause of sleep issues with a doctor's help is recommended.

Despite celebrity endorsements, mouth taping remains a controversial trend. While it may offer some benefits, the risks are significant and largely unproven. Before attempting this practice, it's crucial to consult a doctor or sleep expert. After all, health should always be the top priority.
