Cardinal Farrell Opens Congress on Elderly Care in Church and Society

The Second International Congress on the Pastoral Care of the Elderly began in Rome on October 2, 2025, with Cardinal Colin Farrell delivering the opening remarks. Despite extensive searches, the organizing body and the keynote speaker remain unidentified.

Cardinal Farrell, Prefect of the Dicastery for Laity, Family, and Life, kicked off the event at the Jesuit General Curia. He highlighted the crucial role of the elderly in the Church and society, stating they are 'a blessing' and often the most active members in parish life.

He praised the growing recognition of elderly people as a pastoral priority, attributing this to Pope Francis' leadership and the enduring ecclesial tradition. The Congress aims to identify pastoral responses to the aging population through shared discernment, not top-down solutions. Cardinal Farrell tied this awareness to the teachings of the Second Vatican Council, emphasizing the baptismal dignity and co-responsibility of all the faithful.
