Campaign Encourages "Children to Paint for Elderly": Police in Hamm Raise Alert on Fraud Crimes in Bockum-Hovel

The Police Headquarters in Hamm, Germany, have launched a unique campaign to protect seniors from telephone fraud. Dubbed "Children paint for seniors", the initiative was initially launched in Bockum-Hoevel and is planned to be rolled out across all districts of Hamm in the near future.

The campaign aims to sensitize and protect seniors from becoming victims of telephone scams. Schoolchildren in Bockum-Hoevel have taken up the task, painting pictures on the topic of telephone scammers to warn the elderly. These letters and paintings, part of a special campaign organised by the Police in Hamm, will be distributed by security partners and volunteer helpers of the police.

From June 11th, a letter along with a self-painted picture by a primary school student from Bockum-Hoevel will be placed in letterboxes. The letters contain important information about how to identify and avoid telephone scams.

Scammers often use tactics such as pretending to be relatives, grandchildren, or good acquaintances to elderly and lonely individuals. They swindle victims under the pretext of financial shortages or emergencies, such as accidents, car, or computer purchases. The situations are always presented as extremely urgent by the scammers.

Victims are often put under pressure by repeated calls and sworn to secrecy. As soon as a victim agrees to pay, a person is announced to pick up the money. This campaign is a response to the increasing number of such cases where the gullibility of seniors is exploited.
