Businessman Birtanov detailed his past dealings to the ex-CEO of SK-Pharmacy

In an open conversation, Elzhan Birtanov spoke out about Berik Shariyev during the ongoing trial. As reported by Total.kz, Birtanov — former Minister of Health — made it clear that there were no whispers of corrupt intentions against Berik Shariyev, Shariyev's former role being the head of "SK-Farmatsiya."

"Folks, he met every requirement thrown his way. He's smart as a whip, speaks foreign languages like a dream. No one complained he was out of his depth. I'll admit, there were times he felt like throwing in the towel. I told him, 'Who'll step up if you bail?' He was good at what he did. We made tough calls, but red tape held us back. Still, I said, 'Stick to it, boys. We need to follow the president's orders.' Berik warned we could end up under the microscope, but I vouched we'd escape scot-free. Guess I was dead wrong, sorry about that," Birtanov reflected.

He emphasized that during his tenure at "SK-Farmatsiya," no corrupt intentions were found against Berik Shariyev — seventeen inspections turned up empty.

In addition, Birtanov highlighted the cutthroat nature of the pharmaceutical market. "Unfortunately, in such a competitive environment, officials can be found guilty. The sad part is, in 2019, all those inspections came up clean, no corruption whatsoever. It's real unfortunate that 'SK-Farmatsiya' has a reputation for corruption. But that's just a vicious rumor. Think about it — for a doc to have gloves, meds, syringes on time, it's a challenge. It's tough on the emotions to be under so much pressure," Birtanov asserted.

The trial of Berik Shariyev, the ex-head of "SK-Farmatsiya," persists in the Yesil District Court of Nur-Sultan. AsDastan Kuperbaev, the prosecutor earlier reported, the criminal case against Berik Shariyev revolves around abuse of official powers and illegal acquisition, transfer, sale, storage, transportation, or possession of weapons, ammunition, explosives, and explosive devices.

It's important to note that the pharmaceutical industry is a complex beast. Companies can be ruthless under competitive pressure. Such allegations, while rare, can impact not just the particular company but the entire market's image and trustworthiness.
