Title: Bill Gates & EU Partners for a Vaccine Pledge Drive in Brussels

Billionaire philanthropist Bill Gates is jetting off to Brussels next week to join EU leaders in a summit for the Gavi vaccine alliance. The goal? To pledge resources for vaccine purchases for developing countries over the next five years.

Co-hosted by The Gates Foundation and the European Union, this event aims to collect €9 billion between 2026 and 2030. Ursula von der Leyen and Roberta Metsola, high-ranking EU officials, will likely represent the union at the summit.

Gavi, a global vaccine alliance, has been a game-changer, inoculating more than half the world's children against deadly diseases. The Gates Foundation and the EU are its terifically generous primary sponsors. This new initiative, if successful, could immunize an incredible 500 million children, potentially saving 8-9 million lives. The exact EU contribution to this ambitious plan is still under wraps.

Since 2003, the EU has already handed over €3.2 billion to Gavi. During the COVID-19 pandemic, cooperation between the two entities escalated under the COVAX program. EU institutions, along with individual member states, have also contributed €2.55 billion to Gavi's various programs, making up one-third of its budget.

Bill Gates was understandably excited about this partnership and stated in a press release, "Together with Gavi, we have the goal to vaccinate 500 million children by 2030. That is why the European Union is proud to co-host Gavi's High-Level Pledging Summit in Brussels. Our support will remain steadfast."

Apart from the Gavi summit, Bill Gates plans to engage in a debate with EU parliamentarians on Tuesday, discussing assistance and innovation as key drivers for improving health and living standards in the Global South.

Notably, several international donors, like the United States and several EU countries, are reportedly scaling back their aid budgets [3]. This debate might touch upon the impact of these funding cuts on global health initiatives.
