Bhopal: 28 Gun Permits Revoked Due to Inappropriate Use of Firearms

In a significant move to restore accountability in arms licensing, the district administration in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, has cancelled the arms licences of 28 shooters and suspended two others due to serious irregularities.

The investigation, led by Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Ravi Shankar Rai in collaboration with police officers, uncovered a range of misconduct. Several licence holders were found to have submitted false declarations during renewals, concealing pending criminal cases. Some even falsely claimed participation in competitive shooting events.

The verification drive in August exposed misuse of the sports licence category by individuals who had originally obtained firearms for self-defence. Many shooters were found to be using ammunition meant for practice or tournaments for personal use, a clear violation of licensing norms.

The investigation also revealed that ammunition was diverted to criminal elements. Some shooters were allegedly involved in illegal arms trading, a serious offence that undermines public safety.

The crackdown on arms licences is part of a broader effort to ensure that firearms are used responsibly and only for their intended purpose. Misuse of the sports licence category for personal use was detected, and many failed to account for practice cartridges, a requirement under the licensing norms.

In a separate incident, 14 trainee constables were expelled from training in Madhya Pradesh for using fake papers for leave. This underscores the need for integrity and honesty in the handling of firearms and other sensitive materials.

The specific names of the 30 individuals investigated by SDM Rai are not publicly disclosed. However, the actions taken serve as a clear warning that such misconduct will not be tolerated. The crackdown aims to send a strong message that those who violate the law will face consequences.

The district administration's actions are a step towards ensuring that the sports category of arms licences is used strictly for competitive shooting purposes, as intended. This is a positive development for the safety and security of the community in Bhopal and beyond.
