In the heart of Germany, the city of Salzgitter is taking significant steps to ensure the safety of its youngest residents on the roads. The local police and Public Insurance Braunschweig have joined forces to promote road safety education and the distribution of safety vests for first-graders in the area.

The initiative, aptly named 'Safety through Visibility', aims to prepare children for road traffic in a playful and practical way. The road safety education is designed to raise awareness of visibility in road traffic and improve the road safety of the youngest road users.

Matthias Pintak, responsible for public relations and press at the Police Directorate Salzgitter, has been at the forefront of this action. He emphasizes the importance of road safety education for children, stating, 'Children need support in road traffic.'

In a bid to enhance visibility, approximately 1400 luminous safety vests have been donated by Public Insurance Braunschweig. These vests, when worn, make children visible from a distance of 140 meters, providing drivers with enough time to brake and avoid accidents.

Kathrin Lacey, the traffic safety advisor of Police Salzgitter, is also actively involved. In addition to donating safety vests, she conducts road safety education at most schools, including the acquisition of the pedestrian driver's license.

However, the safety vests are not the only method of ensuring children's safety in road traffic. Anticipatory driving and mutual consideration of all road users are also crucial. Drivers are advised to be ready to brake and take their foot off the gas, especially when children are on the roadside.

It's essential to note that the braking distance of a car at 50 km/h is about 28 meters. In contrast, children in dark clothing are only noticeable by drivers from about 25 meters away. The increased visibility provided by the vests significantly reduces this distance, making our roads safer for everyone.

This initiative is part of a broader effort to improve the safety of children in road traffic. The police in Salzgitter continue to emphasize the importance of road safety education and urge all road users to practice mutual consideration and anticipatory driving.
