Bavaria Reports Third Borna Virus Fatality in Months

Bavaria has reported another fatality from the Borna virus, the third in recent months. The latest victim, a 57-year-old from the Tirschenreuth district, died in a clinic in Regensburg. This follows two previous deaths in the Pfaffenhofen an der Ilm district.

The Borna Disease Virus 1 (BoDV-1) is spread by field voles through bodily fluids like saliva, urine, and feces. Experts advise keeping these rodents away from homes and not leaving pet food outside. If a cat brings in a dead field vole, it should be sprayed with cleaning agents before disposal. When handling dead voles, protective gear including gloves, glasses, and masks should be worn.

The virus can infect various animals, including horses, sheep, and hedgehogs. The last known infection in Bavaria occurred in the Landkreis Tirschenreuth, where a 57-year-old person died in the Bezirksklinikum Regensburg. This recent death marks the third fatality from the Borna virus in Bavaria in a short period.

The Borna virus continues to pose a threat in Bavaria, with three deaths reported in recent months. Authorities urge caution and recommend preventive measures to minimize contact with infected field voles.
