In the heart of Bremen's vibrant Überseestadt, a unique haven for individuals living with dementia has emerged. The BlauHaus, a dementia shared living community, offers a thoughtfully designed, person-centered environment that aims to support and empower those affected by this condition.

The BlauHaus is more than just a home; it's a small-scale, shared living environment designed to feel like a home rather than an institution. This familiar setting, combined with a person-centered care approach, promotes comfort and emotional well-being, reducing stress for its residents.

The building itself incorporates dementia-friendly design principles, with clear wayfinding, safe outdoor access, and calming interiors to reduce confusion and agitation. The trained, compassionate staff, specially trained in dementia care, focus on empathy, respect, and effective communication with residents, ensuring a safe and secure environment while promoting freedom of movement.

Located in the bustling Überseestadt area, the community is connected to local amenities and public spaces, encouraging social participation and engagement. Shared activities, meals, and social interactions further enhance residents' quality of life, fostering companionship and reducing feelings of isolation common among dementia sufferers.

The BlauHaus is more than just a pioneering concept; it has been recognised as such, winning the "Preis Soziale Stadt 2023" award against over 100 other projects. The Martinsclub Bremen e.V., which provides around-the-clock individual nursing care and household support, plays a crucial role in the community's success.

Each resident has their own, individually furnished room in the dementia shared living community, which is barrier-free and wheelchair-accessible, with several bathrooms and its own terrace. Residents can shape their daily life according to their personal preferences, with up to eight people living together in a 320 square meter apartment.

Currently, there is a free place available in the dementia shared living community's WG. Interested individuals or those knowing someone with dementia interested in moving in are asked to contact the Martinsclub Bremen e.V.

The BlauHaus, an inclusive model project by GEWOBA, is a testament to the power of compassionate design and care. It provides an alternative to assisted living forms or living in homes for people with disabilities, offering a dignified and engaging living experience for people with dementia.

The BlauHaus, an inclusive model project, not only provides a dignified living experience for individuals with dementia but also fosters mental health and overall health-and-wellness through its person-centered approach. With a calm and familiar environment, empathetic staff, and a focus on social participation, the BlauHaus aims to reduce stress, encourage emotional well-being, and combat feelings of isolation commonly experienced by those with dementia.
