Anthrax Outbreak in Rangpur: 11 Cases Reported, First-Time Detection in Region
Anthrax has been detected in Rangpur for the first time, with 11 people diagnosed in Kaunia, Mithapukur, and Pirgacha upazilas. This bacterial infection, which is endemic in Bangladesh, poses a threat to both humans and animals in the region. Anthrax is a zoonotic disease that can spread through contact with infected animals, handling contaminated materials, or consuming undercooked meat. Symptoms include fever, round skin lesions, and sometimes itching. The incubation period ranges from 1 to 20 days, making early diagnosis crucial. The Department of Livestock is currently vaccinating animals in the affected areas to prevent further spread. However, slaughtering sick domestic animals can also spread the disease, so this practice should be avoided. Treatment is available at upazila health complexes with antibiotics and lotions. This is the first time anthrax has been detected in Rangpur, highlighting the need for vigilance and prompt action. The Department of Livestock is working to vaccinate animals and prevent the spread of the disease. Anyone experiencing symptoms should seek medical attention immediately.
