German Actor Heinz Hoenig Struggles with Misdiagnosis and Life-Threatening Condition

Berlin, Germany - Actor Heinz Hoenig (73) and his wife Annika Kärsten-Hoenig (39) have faced a harrowing six months as Hoenig fights for his life in a Berlin clinic. Initially, he underwent surgery to remove his esophagus due to a bacterial infection and is now awaiting a life-saving aorta operation. Recently, Annika revealed that her husband was initially given a false diagnosis, causing stress and health complications.

In the podcast "24 - (K)ein Sommer in Berlin," Annika describes the dramatic turn of events that began in March, when Hoenig's health started deteriorating rapidly. Following their wedding anniversary, Hoenig became increasingly weak and exhausted, culminating in Annika taking him to the hospital on Easter Sunday. At the hospital, doctors initially suspected pneumonia. However, as Hoenig's condition worsened, he became dis oriented and was talking gibberish.

Anxious and distraught, Annika sought help from a young doctor, who flippantly suggested dementia as a possibility. The diagnosis shocked Annika, who had worked on a geriatric psychiatry ward and knew that Hoenig's symptoms did not align with dementia. Examining the medical records, Annika found alarming results such as a low HB value and low oxygen saturation in the blood, which she believes should have been red flags.

Only an endoscopy showed the true cause of Hoenig's symptoms - inflammation in his esophagus. Although the misdiagnosis has been rectified, Annika remains angry at the young doctor who she feels did not conduct a thorough examination. Despite being able to sleep in his own bed again, Hoenig's health status remains precarious.

In the podcast, Annika aims to offer support to others facing similar situations. "It was a big journey for me that changed me both internally and externally," she said on her Instagram story.
