Alcohol poisoning claims 10 lives in Ahmadi governorate

In the Ahmadi governorate of Kuwait, a tragic incident has unfolded, with ten expatriates losing their lives due to methanol poisoning from consuming spurious, illegally brewed alcohol purchased from an unlicensed seller in Jleeb Block 4.

Initial investigations suggest that the deaths were caused by the consumption of toxic alcohol, and around 15 other expatriates who consumed the same liquor are currently receiving treatment, with several in critical condition in Ahmadi Governorate hospitals.

Authorities have taken swift action, arresting multiple suspects involved in the illegal manufacturing and distribution network of the toxic alcohol. The Ministry of Interior has dismantled at least six illicit alcohol factories and apprehended a gang of key suspects, totaling 67 individuals connected to the operation.

This crackdown is part of coordinated efforts between security agencies and health authorities to manage the crisis and prevent further casualties. The Ministry of Health has also highlighted a larger scale background problem with methanol-contaminated drinks causing numerous hospitalizations and fatalities in Kuwait recently.

The reported cause of the deaths is alcohol poisoning, and the victims include various Asian nationalities, with some Malayalis among them. The use of methanol—a highly toxic substance not safe for consumption—appears to be the primary hazard in these cases.

Official warnings have been issued, highlighting methanol ingestion symptoms including headaches, vomiting, blurred vision, seizures, and death. As the investigation continues, authorities are urging caution and reminding the public to only consume alcohol from licensed sellers.

The Ministry of Interior is focusing on the safety of locally produced alcohol and is taking steps to ensure its regulation. More cases of death are being reported, and the ministry is working to improve the safety of alcohol produced locally and to control the production of alcohol.

The ministry is monitoring the situation closely and has clamped down on the production of spurious alcohol. The ministry's concern for public safety is evident in its escalated response, which has become significant as of mid-August 2025.

As the investigation into this tragic incident continues, the public is urged to exercise caution when consuming alcohol and to only purchase from licensed sellers to avoid any potential health hazards.
